Professor Song Bin, one of the leaders of the Department of Radiology at West China Hospital of Sichuan University and Party Secretary of Sanya People's Hospital/West China Sanya Hospital, was officially elected as the president of the Asian Society of Abdominal Radiology (ASAR) at the annual meeting held in Kobe, Japan in June 2025. He became the third Chinese mainland expert to lead the society. This news not only inspired the domestic radiology community but also highlighted the significant influence of Chinese medical imaging on the international stage.
As the former director of the Department of Radiology and leader in abdominal imaging at West China Hospital, Professor Song Bin pioneered a new standard for liver cancer diagnosis based on MR functional imaging and a new model for liver cancer screening in high-risk populations. This significantly improved the detection rate and diagnostic accuracy of early-stage liver cancer, which was validated through international multicenter studies. He was the first to propose the construction standard for a multimodal medical image database for chronic liver diseases and primary liver cancer in China and led the development of domestic and international multicenter liver cancer imaging databases, promoting the homogenization of liver cancer imaging in clinical practice.
He led Chinese teams in actively participating in the formulation of various international guidelines, consensuses, standards, and protocols for abdominal imaging, integrating Chinese experience into global standards and significantly enhancing China's voice in the international radiology community. In 2023, he was awarded the title of "Honorary Fellow" by the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology. In 2024, he was granted the title of "Honorary Member" by the Korean Society of Radiology. These honors are not only a recognition of his academic achievements but also an acknowledgment of the international influence of Chinese medical imaging.
