On the evening of April 4, a welcoming ceremony was held at Chengdu East Railway Station for Professor Jin Tao and Associate Professor Chen Kefei, West China Hospital’s members of the 22^nd batch of China (Sichuan) Medical Team to Mozambique. Relevant heads of the International Exchange Center of the Health Commission of Sichuan Province, and heads of WCH’s Liver Surgery Department, Urology Department and Human Resources Department as well as families of the team attended.

In September, 2018, WCH received the task for aiding African countries. Upon completion of procedures including personal application, recommendation by relevant departments and selection by our hospital, Professor Jin Tao of Urology Department and Associate Professor Chen Kefei of Liver Surgery Department were selected to join the 22^nd batch of China (Sichuan) Medical Team to Mozambique from 2018 to 2020, in which Professor Jin Tao served as team leader.  After completing full-time Portuguese language training, they left for Maputo, Mozambique, in January 2019 to carry out the medical aid missions. According to the original plan, they would return back in January 2021; however, no new team could be sent to Mozambique as scheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Other members of the 22^nd team had returned as scheduled, but Professor Jin Tao and Associate Professor Chen Kefei kept staying there to assist the work of fighting the pandemic in Mozambique. Till March 19, 2021, the mission was transferred to a new team, the two doctors finally came back to Chengdu after the extended service.

The members of the 22^nd Medial-Aid Team, under the leadership of Professor Jin Tao and with strong support of Associate Professor Chen Kefei, worked hard and embraced the challenges and won unanimous praises from the Mozambican government, local doctors and patients. In June 2020, the Chinese Embassy in Mozambique forwarded Maputo Central Hospital’s “Letter of Thanks” to the Medical Team; the team was also highly commended by the National Health Commission of China.

Professor Jin Tao and Associate Professor Chen Kefei successfully interpreted Chinese medical team’s spirit of “fearing no hardships, willing to making contributions, healing the wounded and rescuing the dying with their great love” by their excellent work performance; also, they have made significant contributions to the friendship between the two peoples and the development of our bilateral relations.
